Common Mistakes That Graphic Designers Make

Design must reflect the practical and aesthetic in business but above all… good design must primarily serve people. – Thomas J. Watson

A graphic designer is the one who has the power to convert images into information or message. He applies his skills to create creatives that communicate ideas, lead to action, and occupy people’s attention.

A good Graphic Designer must have a natural vision for designs and colours. He creates designs or graphics that effectively resonate with the target audience.

Below are the mistakes that not-so-experienced graphic designers make:

  • Mismatch or Wrong Fonts

Fonts play a crucial role in communicating the message to the audience as they convey the soul of the design. The font’s colour and size matter a lot in designing various marketing collaterals. For Example, the font size in a hoarding needs to be big enough so; that it is visible from a long distance; a hoarding with a small font size is good for nothing. One can use different fonts for the heading or text under it to create a balance, but too many font variations can make the design clumsy.

  • Not Choosing Right Colours

Colour combination is a crucial part of any design as it draws people’s attention and evokes emotions or feelings. Colours help in highlighting the most significant part of the design or the message you want to communicate. Every colour sends a message, so it is necessary to choose the right colours to give the right message to the audience. A single wrong colour can mar the whole feel of the design.

  • Lack of Negative Space

Negative space is nothing but empty spaces in the design, and it is as crucial as colours and font in the design. An example of a good negative space is the Google website, where you never wonder where the search bar is. Negative space helps in depicting the whole design clean and clear and keeps the content of the design from crowding out the visual components. It directs attention from one part of the design to another so that the message flows easily.

  • Wrong Kerning

The space between two characters is known as kerning. Proper spacing between two characters is important in designing. Characters or alphabets that are too close together appear sloppy and crowded. Placing letters too far apart makes them look as though they’re floating independently of each other. Proper kerning adds just the right amount of space in every word so that all text is legible.

  • Not Revising the Final Design

A graphic designer should not only check the spelling errors when he has completed creating the final design. He must give importance to re-checking structure, spacing, and colours combination. He must check that all the elements complement each other and look soothing to the eyes. It’s easy to overlook errors in your work after you’ve been doing it for hours or days, so it’s better to get it checked with third-person always.
